Prior to commencing any direct instruction program, students must be tested. These tests determine the program, level, and cycle the student should be placed at. For example, we offer 6 different reading programs. While the philosophies and most teaching techniques are the same, the content differs and is geared to a specific student profile. Additional information about the student, gained at the placement test, helps drive other critical program decision making.
Placement testing is done at our office at 250 Merton St. Following the test, findings and programming decisions will be discussed with the family.
We do not repeat tests which have already been done. Should your child already have test results, please provide these, to assist in making the best possible program decisions.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WITHIN THESE PROGRAMS THERE ARE ADDITIONAL SUBSETS, MAKING THE CHOICES EVEN MORE SPECIFIC. ADDITONALLY THE PROGRAMS THEN COVER SEVERAL LEVELS FROM BEGINNER TO ADULT.
The following are summaries of our most frequently used programs.
READING MASTERY (RM):
There are several versions of the Reading Mastery series. They are all developmental reading programs. These curricula focus on teaching individuals to read and comprehend written material. The earlier levels of the program place major emphasis on word attack. The later levels with high content material, stress the reason for reading – information. RM is suitable for students reading at an elementary stage.
CORRECTIVE READING (CR):
The corrective reading program is a remedial reading program. Students placed in this program are usually 2 or more years behind. They lack the skills to do detailed word analysis of the structure of the word. The CR program focuses on teaching these skills over several levels. Because of the high level of unpredictability in the unfamiliar stories, students must use their word analysis skills to read. CR can be used with students in elementary and secondary levels.
REWARDS:
The REWARDS program is designed for students in grades 4 through 12 who have mastered basic reading skills associated with second and third grade expectations but who are not accurate or fluent readers in grade-level materials. These students lack word identification skills and even the strategies required to ‘decode’ longer words. They are generally slower at oral reading, make more errors, and comprehend more poorly than their peers. Their oral reading rate is generally between 60 to 120 correct words per minute (goal 160 words per minute at sixth grade level).
CONNECTING MATH CONCEPTS (CMC):
This is a developmental series, which teaches elementary school math with DI’s characteristic explicit and systematic introduction, review and integration of skills. Tests to objectively determine the level of mastery of important concepts are regularly administered. Program design allows each lesson to be varied and consist of several different exercises. Skill introduction minimizes the percentage of errors. CMC gives students a solid foundation in math and helps them to make connections and develop an understanding of mathematics, instead of simply memorizing information.
LANGUAGE FOR LEARNING:
Language for Learning is an oral language program. It teaches children with language difficulties to communicate well, and to understand and follow directions, with special emphasis on academic instruction. Students also make deductions and learn new vocabulary. This program is suitable for students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, Primary school - special education, or ESL and first grade –progressing slower than peers, as well as speech correction and language programs.
EXPRESSIVE WRITING:
Expressive Writing is a 40 lesson program. Students learn new skills in each lesson and continually practice the skills they learned. A cumulative program design ensures concepts, which have been taught, are never dropped. Everything taught is integrated into the lesson material from the moment it is introduced. Thereafter, students are asked to apply what they’ve mastered in different contexts.
