Dear Parents: Please find below a series of web sites on Direct Instruction. These sites vary a great deal and represent descriptions of Direct Instruction, examples of how it is designed, summaries of research studies and endorsements from major US educational personnel including the American Federation of Teachers. Also find reference to an unsolicited letter voicing concern over the wide spread use of an educational approach whose claims are not supported by the scientific evidence, namely Reading Recovery. The letter has been sent to US policy makers, educational leaders and researchers and federal research organizations who are increasingly being called upon to either support the use of Reading Recovery or to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the program before Congress.
